Buyer's Guide — Sport & Active Wear

Best Watch Straps for Sport & Active Wear

The biggest mistake active watch wearers make is assuming their strap is waterproof when it isn't. Canvas absorbs water. Leather ruins in one swim. Even nylon holds moisture against the skin. The only strap materials that genuinely don't care about water, sweat, pool chemicals, or sunscreen are FKM rubber and vulcanized rubber. Everything else is a compromise.

That said, not every situation calls for full waterproofing. A NATO strap is fine for hiking, travel, and incidental splashes — it dries in minutes and costs $4 to replace if it gets trashed. The right answer depends on how serious the water exposure is.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best waterproof watch strap?

FKM rubber is the only honest answer for serious water exposure — diving, swimming laps, or anything where the strap is submerged. It's fully waterproof, resists chlorine and saltwater, and doesn't absorb sweat. Silicone is a step down — softer but less resistant to heat and UV degradation. For casual splashes, a NATO or Zulu works fine.

Can I wear a NATO strap swimming?

For a beach swim or occasional splash, yes. NATO nylon dries quickly and handles light water exposure well. But for regular pool or ocean use, or any kind of diving, FKM rubber is the right material. Wet nylon held tight against your wrist for long periods can cause skin irritation.

What's the best strap for a dive watch?

Either FKM rubber or a Tropic strap. The Tropic is a vintage perforated rubber design originally made for Blancpain and Omega Seamaster in the 1960s — it's having a genuine collector revival and suits vintage dive watch references authentically. Modern FKM is technically superior. Both are fully waterproof.

Are silicone watch straps the same as rubber?

No. Most cheap 'rubber' straps are actually silicone, which is softer and less durable. FKM (also sold as Viton) is a fluorocarbon synthetic rubber used in aerospace and medical applications — it's stiffer, more heat-resistant, and significantly more durable. Premium rubber strap brands like Horus and Rubber B use FKM. Good AliExpress FKM straps are available for $5–$15.
